There is a large amount of toxic household substances such as fluorescent lamps, gas cylinders, batteries, motor oils and paints that go to landfill or are otherwise disposed of irresponsibly in the environment through the stormwater or sewerage systems.
To address this problem VoB in conjunction with the project partners developed and trialled a convenient recycling drop off service for toxic household materials for the community at The Geelong Resource Recovery Facility.
The result was a best practice model that could be transferable to other sites within the region and across the State. A heighten level of community awareness was generated and the prevention of hundreds of tonnes of toxic chemicals entering the environment was achieved.
Collection of baseline data was used to encourage industry involvement in resource recovery programs for the selected materials. As a result there is now a permanent ‘Detox your Home’ collection facility in Geelong as well as several other sites throughout Victoria with more planned.
